It started with another project: Fourth Fiction, the “first blog-based literary reality show.” Several official contestants and a few outside participants worked at writing a novella based on a series of prompts. Viewers (readers) voted off their least favourite at each stage, until the very last, when it turned out… Well, I don’t want to ruin the surprise, but it was quite an event. I’d never read anything like it. All those people who’d never even met, combining their talents into something great. And during the process I got to know Jodi Cleghorn, who was writing as an outside participant.

Through her I found out about The Red Book. Happily I’d received a Sony Reader for Christmas, so I got to read the book right away (I believe I was first in line on release day!) and enjoyed it a lot. When she asked if I’d like to write for the next in the series, there was no way I’d decline. I was raring to go and almost annoyed that I’d have to wait so long to start writing. Then as my time grew nearer I was more and more nervous. Taking someone else’s character is a huge responsibility. I was worried I wouldn’t do it justice.

Happily, my editor Paul Anderson has a delicate yet straight-to-the-point approach, and when I eventually started writing there was no moment that I regretted getting involved. The stories that have been produced are so varied and impressive, I can’t wait to get to read them all together after publication. The whole is truly more than the sum of its parts, and I hope we’ve created something with the Yin & Yang Books that will be very much enjoyed by many readers.

Jen Brubacher’s “Lost and Found” is the eighth story for The Yin Book. You can read more about the creation of “Lost and Found” on 8th September and the first 750 words will be available 6th October.

  1. “Delicate yet straight-to-the-point” – that’s another one for my CV!

I can’t wait to read it!

  3. Believe it or not I fought with myself over that line, Paul. “How to get across how someone can be so blunt… in a good way!?” ;)

    Thank Marion! (aka Mom.)

Wow I remember Fourth Fiction – was only just starting to get into writing and didn’t really know what it was all about. But I am loving being a part of this collaborative project and reading about how everyone came to the project. I too can’t wait to read all the stories in order…and Paul’s thrilling conclusion to both books!

  5. Laura Eno says:

Thanks for sharing your story. It was a wonderful experience, wasn’t it?

  6. Erk, I meant “ThankS Marion.” :)

It really was a wonderful experience. And I don’t feel like it’s over yet, because we still get to do these posts, the promotion, and… the launch!

  7. Ah yes… and also getting to see how Paul wraps it all up. I don’t envy him that role.

  8. Annie says:

its a great feeling to be in the midst of so many talented writers.. and a pleasure to be writing with you Jen

  9. Hi Marion (aka Jen’s Mum) Welcome to CW!

‘Blunt with a smile’ is known around these quarters as a ‘beautiful razorblade’ but perhaps that’s just all the slashing and hacking? It would probably be considered anti-social to whip out my razorblade in polite company. Good thing Paul’s discarded his ‘good cop’ hat this year and meaned up a little. Now I don’t look quite so evil as an editor.

  10. Ev Bishop says:

I can’t wait to read it too; I love the collaboration concept and I’m super curious about the authors pull it off/add to each others’ stories while creating their own. Will there be a print version too?

  11. Ev Bishop says:

Er–that should have been “I’m super curious about _how_ the authors pull it off/add to each others’ stories . . .”

  12. There will be a print version! Release date TBA. :)
